What is a board year like?
in line with the upcoming board week, the 19th Board has taken to the keyboard to look back on their experience in their board year so far. Get a look into what all seven of them experienced in their year together at Dimensie and what they have to say about doing a board year and what led them there. You might relate and become interested as well!

Beginning my Dimensie journey in the Kick-In camp of 2019, Dimensie immediately caught my attention and after joining the Kic’D committee roughly a month later, there was no turning back. I might only have been part of Dimensie for a year before I applied to become a board member, but the experience I had had so far just made it all the more interesting to experience a new challenge. And a challenge is what a board year ultimately is. A challenge for yourself to discover new possibilities and skills. But not a challenge you will have to face all by yourself. In my case I had, and still have, 6 amazing and hardworking girls right by my side that I can always count on and I am more than thankful for that. It probably differs for each person and board position, what exactly you learn during your board year, but I learned the value of good support and that with the right team, team-work truly is the best kind of work.

From stumbling into a random Glühwein evening at Dimensie the first time back in 2018, I was already amazed by the feeling of connectedness that it brought about, and I’ve felt it at every other event I attended since then. Fast forward a year and I experienced some major disappointment after joining the GalaCie committee and having our Gala be cancelled on the same day it was scheduled to take place (yes I’m telling that story again, it’s my origin story), but that sparked an even bigger motivation in me to become part of the board of Dimensie and have even more opportunities to organize and join events and get-togethers that bring me that same feeling of connectedness and fun that all other events up to that point had. In light of all this, my board year so far has given me exactly that, a feeling of connectedness that was hard to come by during the current situation anyway, and a big surge of growth that I would have not expected from myself in the beginning. Doing this together with my 6 other awesome board members, I am nothing but grateful for what I have been able to experience so far and what I’ve been able to learn about myself and about working with others down the road.

From the first year that I joined Dimensie, I always wanted to be part of the board. The first year I joined some events to dip my toes in the water, and the second year I decided to be part of the EuroTrip committee, the CareerWeek committee and later the CareerCie committee. I had so much fun working with other committee and board members, that I decided to apply for board, and the rest is history. The main thing that I have learned is that (I know this is cheesy) you should never underestimate yourself. Dealing with the finances is quite a responsible task, and at first I was scared of making mistakes and messing up. What I completely forgot is that there are so many people around to help, and that these people only want to see you succeed. And of course, my other board members are the baddest b’s around. Whenever it gets tough, you always have a friend and a listening ear. This year has been really all in the spirit of overcoming obstacles and being proud of what I have done, and being impressed by what others have done.

As a board member of Dimensie I have learned to take a lot of responsibility, to manage my time very well with several schedules playing together, and to openly communicate in advance of time. The biggest challenges that I had to overcome were learning how to use illustrator and photoshop, writing newsletters, getting into contact with several companies and persons in higher positions, but mostly understanding the importance of taking time for my personal life. I had to get used to differentiate between work, study and personal life, because being constantly available over the phone for all members is very time consuming and exhausting, despite it being a lot of fun and extremely worth it. Within these past months I grew more than I have expected, became part of a network of people, and learned many life skills which I can use in my occupational and private future.

At the beginning of my studies in 2017, I joined Dimensie right away as an active member after an amazing Kick-in with people whom I am still close friends with today. By joining challenging but fun committees during the first years of my study, I got to know the board and association life better, as well as some genuinely great people. When applying for a board year at some later point in time, I was seeking for connectedness with students from different years, for new opportunities to enhance my professional and organizational working skills as well as for people I can embrace the board work with while actively supporting and learning from each other. In the past few months, I feel like I have personally grown by solving all kinds of challenges together with my six amazing fellow board members, even though this year did not go as expected at all. Nevertheless, I have made great memories so far, learned a lot about myself and who I am, and enjoyed every tiny bit of it.

Since my first days at the UT I am Part of Dimensie and joined several committees. I got to know many new people, developed myself within the committees and had a great time with great people. Dimensie enriched my student life and still does. With starting a new chapter and taking on a new challenge I became part of the board. It was one of the best decisions I made so far. I am working with great people. The board but also all other people I am working with are supportive and we solve challenges together, especially in these crazy times. I often had to step out of my comfort zone which made me grow and develop myself. Although we all imagined our board year to be different, I made great experiences, faced and solved challenges and made a lot of new friends

Dimensie for me has an atmosphere of inclusiveness. Already in my first weeks on campus I felt like being part of a group when entering our association room, the rubix. There were people with lots of more years of study experience that had open ears and helpful advice. I quickly felt like I want to give that feeling of belongingness back and help people with sharing my own study experiences I gathered. Therefore, I decided towards the end of my first year to join the next board. So here we are. In the past month I got to learn a lot from my fellow board members and from the challenges and tasks I was confronted with. Being able to take additional responsibilities, communication, study/work-life balance are just some examples. Additionally, I also had lots of fun at our events, talking to our members and also befriending my fellow board members, as well as different boards. All in all it is a great experience.
